U.S.C.G. Blackthorn
The buoy tender, U.S.C.G. Blackthorn, was commissioned in 1944. While her primary mission was to service aids to navigation, she served ably in many other missions and assignments. During her service career, she had received many upgrades and overhauls. After what would be her last overhaul in Tampa, she collided with another boat in the shipping channels of Tampa Bay and sank. Out of the 50-member crew, 23 died.
There is more information on the USCG Blackthorn  page on the United States Coast Guard  website.
