Tampa bombardment during the Civil War |

The shell was retreived by a blacksmith, Addison Mansell, whose shop was nearby. After dumping the powder out of the shell, he poked inside with a hot wire to verify that he had gotten all of it. Much to his surpise, there was still enough to send flames roaring out. His eyebrows, front hair and whiskers were burned and he was temporarily blinded. Out of all three instances of Federal shelling, this was the only direct injury. |
