Cemeteries of Florida presents:

Oaklawn Cemetery

Tampa, Florida

Tampa's oldest cemetery, established in 1850, was originally called the Lady's Memorial Burying Ground. The Ladies' Memorial Society purchased land to add to the original grant by the city council. Another portion of land was donated by James T. Magbee in 1880. Many of the founding fathers and mothers of Tampa are buried here. Prior to 1850, burials were commonly made on a family's own land. There used to be a fence between the St. Louis and the Oaklawn cemeteries. However, it fell into disrepair and was removed during clean-ups. There is a marker that shows one of the division points.

It is owned and operated by the
city of Tampa .

This cemetery was featured in an article ("Tampa Bay's 'Six Feet Under' Tour" by Karen Haymon Long) in the June 23, 2002 The Tampa Tribune Travel Section.
