Tiger Flowers Cemetery

Lakeland, Florida

Tiger Flowers Cemetery, an African-American cemetery next to Lakeview Cemetery, was probably started in the 1800s. In 1943, the name was changed from whatever it had been to 'Tiger Flowers Cemetery'. Theodore "Tiger" Flowers, a boxer, was Middleweight Champion in 1926. He died on November 16, 1927. It is owned and operated by the City of Lakeland .

General View
What looks like an abundance of ledger stones is actually the tops of burial vaults. The vault is set into the ground so that the top can serve as a ledger and/or grave marker, thus making double use of something to be purchased anyway. The tops are often painted silver to make them look nice. The author has observed this use of burial vault lids most often, but not exclusively, in African-American cemeteries.
