Clara Britwitz
Born June 5 1881
Died July 26 1898
Clara died at the age of 17 after her mother had given medicine to her for a headache. The medicine turned out to have been a poison of some kind. This is likely because some pesticides are sold in tablet form even today.
Clara's family originally immigrated from Romania into New York. Since they were dry goods merchants, they opened a store in Key West to cater to the cigar workers. After the industry moved to Ybor City, so did the Britwitz family. The building which housed their store still stands. The father, Melech Britwitz, was a founding member of Congregation Rodeph Sholem. The youngest of five children was born in Tampa in 1897. Clara died in 1898. Sometime after 1900, the family moved back to New York, leaving Clara here.
