Peter Oliphant Knight was born in Pennsylvania in 1865. He briefly practiced law in Indiana before moving to Ft. Myers in 1883. His talents predicted his later success. He helped to incorporate Ft. Myers in 1885 and later served as its mayor and state representative in Tallahassee. In 1891, he moved to Tampa and quickly established a power base in Tampa and Tallahassee using his talents as a courthouse lawyer. He was attorney and/or director for a wide number of corporations, among them Tampa Gas Company, Tampa Electrical Company, the Tribune Publishing Company and the Tampa Building & Loan Association.
