Nicoḷ (Americanized to Nicholas) was a native of Contessa Entellina. After his arrival in Tampa, he started selling produce in Hyde Park from a horse-drawn wagon. Eventually, he opened a small produce store on 7th Ave and 23rd St. By the 1920s, his business had grown so large that they could process 50 carloads of fruit and vegetables. The business was mostly wholesale and owned one of the largest cold-storage plants in Florida. In order to exploit international fruits, such as bananas, the Geraci family incorporated the American Fruit and Steamship Company. |
