Cemeteries of Florida presents:

L'Unione Italiana Cemetery

Tampa, Florida

L'Unione Italiana means "The Italian Club". This is a mutual-aid society and social club started by Italians from Sicily that included some Latin members in the cigar-making heyday of Ybor City in 1894. The cemetery was established in 1900 when land was purchased from the Armwood family who already had members of their family buried on the land, most notably Blanche Armwood.

Some Sicilian families came directly from Sicily. Others had worked in the sugarcane fields of St. Cloud, Florida and had sent for their families. Still others arrived in Tampa after anti-Italian riots in New Orleans had threatened their lives.

This cemetery was featured in an article ("Tampa Bay's 'Six Feet Under' Tour" by Karen Haymon Long) in the June 23, 2002 The Tampa Tribune Travel Section.
